Once a laughingstock, the VA is now a modern medicine model

Veterans Administration hospitals, once considered lumbering and ineffective, are now viewed as model healthcare facilities and systems, according to the Washington Post. Years of belt-tightening and a complete overhaul of the agency's healthcare administration led to innovations and better use of innovations to improve service to patients.

The conversion shows that patient safety can ultimately save money for hospitals, as they spend less on unneeded procedures. They are also drawing more veterans to receive care because the system's reputation has improved.

Screenings for different types of cancer are up at VA hospitals, as are other preventive procedures. Veterans still complain of long waits for visits, however.
