A study commissioned by the University of Michigan shows that reminding physicians about catheters can reduce the risk of catheter-related infections. By removing the catheter as soon as medically advisable, physicians reduce the possible exposure to infection for patients, according to the press release provided by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, which funded the study.

According to the release, many physicians are busy and sometimes forget that a patient has a urinary catheter. By placing the reminder on the chart, the physician is prompted to check whether the catheter is necessary and order its removal.

Reducing the incidences of urinary tract infections from catheters could offset the costs of implementing the reminder system, according to the study.
