IL to launch hospital apology pilot program

Illinois will become the first state to use an apology program for hospitals, according to a Medical News Today report.

Dubbed the "Sorry Works!" program, selected hospitals will begin to apologize for bad outcomes that lead to medical errors and offer the patients and their families' compensation up front. If the program saves fails to save money or increases payouts based on bad outcomes, the state will refund the facilities for the increased payments.

State officials said they think the pilot program will be a success, because similar programs not funded by the state have shown a decrease in malpractice suits and overall hospital payouts for medical errors.
