A consortium of nine Michigan hospitals have teamed up to share information, tips and strategies to improve patient safety, according to a press release by the University of Michigan Health system.

The project, funded by a $117,000 grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, gives the nine facilities a chance to compare and analyze different safety strategies employed at the hospitals. The new program will also allow hospitalists from the different hospitals to confer on best practices.

The hope is that hospitals in the program can quickly and efficiently incorporate new patient safety standards and practices by sharing information with the other facilities.

The increase in hospitalists, who are general internists who exclusively treat patients in the hospital setting, was a driving factor behind the program. These doctors can help remind the rest of the staff of possible problems for individual patients, which helps reduce infections and preventable errors.
