Trinity Health Center in Minot, ND, kicked off National Patient Safety Awareness Week with a staff training session featuring carnival games, clowns, and candy, reports the Minot Daily News.

Organizers of the event wanted all employees to be aware of each of the JCAHO's patient safety goals, even those that don't relate directly to their jobs, said Jane Nelson, operating room coordinator and one of the committee members in charge of organizing the fair.

The hospital did so through a fair called "The Greatest Safety Show on Earth," which featured booths on the following topics:

  • surgical fires
  • fall prevention
  • medication safety
  • hand hygiene
  • alarms
  • patient identification
  • miscommunication
  • wrong site, wrong patient surgery
  • infusion pumps

One booth featured a game where staff guessed the number of pieces of candy in several jars. Each jar represented a category of medical equipment, such as diagnostic, life support, or monitoring machines. The number of candies in each jar represented the number of pieces of equipment in that category and the employee whose guess was closest to the correct number won the jar of candy.
