Physicians need to make sure new prescriptions that they give patients won't interact with other medications the patients take, but it can be difficult to keep track of which drugs interact. Every six months, The Medical Letter, a nonprofit organization, updates a list of the most common drug interactions that physicians can check using their personal computer or handheld electronic organizer.

Physicians use the Adverse Drug Interactions Program by entering every drug a patient takes, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs. The program lists known interactions as well as references the physician can review for more information. The Medical Letter will release its latest list of interactions April 30.
