A Massachusetts surgeon recently accused of showing up drunk to perform surgery did the same thing three years ago while working at a different Massachusetts hospital.

Robert Caulkins, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, had his privileges revoked in July 2001 from UMass Medical Center in Worcester after other doctors smelled alcohol on his breath. At the time, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine disciplined him for practicing medicine while impaired by alcohol.

Last week, the board revoked Caulkins' medical license. In addition, he was suspended from Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, where he was most recently accused of showing up drunk to perform surgery.
