Similar to preparing for a natural disaster or community emergency, preparing for a forensic patient requires appropriate procedures, training, and communication, and in some cases, drills. IAHSS has guidelines available to its members that touch on some of the important security aspects of forensic patient preparation. Based on these guidelines, facilities should consider the following:

  • Identifying someone within the healthcare facility to coordinate communication with corrections officers and prepare staff members for a forensic patient. Typically this responsibility falls to the security director.
  • Providing medical care providers with training and education on the forensic patient policy.
  • Developing methods to ensure the patient is weapon-free.
