Some medications are in short supply at hospitals across the nation, reports ABC News.

The medications in question are those used for sedation, blood thinning, and chemotherapy. Limited manufacturing and lack of profits are causing the shortage, which has led some hospitals to ration doses. Alternative medications are not always covered by a patient's health insurance, exacerbating the problem.

Often, hospitals are not aware of the shortage beforehand, and drug manufacturing companies are not required to report shortages to the Food and Drug Administration.
