Hospital cuts C. diff rate by 40%

Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK, cut its Clostridium difficile (C. diff) rate by 40% in three months, reports American Medical News.
The news comes from a study presented at the American College of Gastroenterology's annual meeting. The C. diff rate dropped after the hospital formed a multidisciplinary plan. The hospital cut the rates below the national average, from 11.3 per 10,000 admissions to 6.9. The national average is 13.
The plan included putting waste baskets near the patient door to avoid recontamination as staff stripped off precautionary measures, as well as allowing nurses to order stool samples from patients suspected to have C. diff, without waiting for a physician, allowing for faster detection and isolation.
