The Institutional Review Board at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY, has given GE Healthcare the green light on testing their Smart Patient Room technology at its facility, according to Health Care IT's eWeek.com.

The technology can determine whether soap and sanitizer dispensers were used before and after medical professionals see a patient, track when patients get in and out of bed, and monitor clinical round frequency. It consists of optical sensors, facial recognition software, and cameras and speakers that are all installed into existing hospital rooms.

The technology will also issue an alert if it detects a risk, such as patient movement indicating a stroke or delirium. It is the first time the technology will be tested in an actual healthcare setting.
