Commonwealth Fund report: U.S. healthcare lags behind other countries on performance measures

A report from the Commonwealth Fund released in late June shows that U.S. healthcare ranks last or nearly last on six dimensions of performance: quality, access, efficiency, equity, and healthy lives. The report, Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: How the Performance of the U.S. Health Care System Compares Internationally compares the U.S. with six other countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
The U.S., however has the most expensive healthcare system of all of the countries in the report. As it did in previous editions of the report released in 2004, 2006, and 2007, the U.S. ranks last on the dimensions of care listed above. Although the recent U.S. health reform legislation is expected to change these results in the future, the way in which the U.S. most differed from the other countries included in the report was its lack of providing universal healthcare.
The report was based on surveys with patient and physician feedback on their opinions of care from all of the countries in the report.
