AHRQ: One out of every eight visits to ED is from mental health and substance abuse patients

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project has released a brief saying that 12.5% of all visits to the emergency department (ED) in 2007 were related to mental health and substance abuse issues. The statistical brief reflects data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample concerning patients with mental health and substance abuse conditions.
Patients who visited the ED with a mental health or substance abuse issue were 2.5 times more likely to be admitted to the hospital than patients with other conditions. Of the reasons for visiting the ED, mood disorder was the most common given, at 42.7%.
