The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced its proposed Common Program Requirements last week. The draft requirements continue to keep the maximum number of hours that residents can work at 80 per week, averaged over four weeks. This comes after much debate over whether having better rested residents improves patient safety, or whether shortening shifts and hours actually puts more patients in danger by creating more handoffs.

A new addition in the proposed requirements is an increase in duty hour and supervision rules for first-year residents. First year residents would be allowed to work no more than 16 hours each day, and there would be stricter requirements for exceptions to the duty hours rule.
