Study: Using VAP bundle reduces costs, reduces rates of VAP

Two surgical intensive care units implemented the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) bundle and saw a reduction in cases from 10.2/1000 ventilator days to 4.3/1000 ventilator days, according to a study recently published in the Archives of Surgery.
The IHI's VAP bundle includes head-of-bed elevation, extubation assessment, sedation break, peptic ulcer prophylaxis, and deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis. Incidence of VAP was estimated to cost $30,000 per patient admission, and the hospital estimates it has saved $1.08 million since its incidence of VAP has been reduced.
