2009 Leapfrog Hospital Survey: Quality improvement a challenge, waste rampant

The release of the 2009 Leapfrog Hospital Survey finds that fewer than 50% of hospitals are achieving adequate quality standards. The survey found that only half of hospitals meet quality standards for mortality, said Leah Binder, Leapfrog CEO, who released the survey results at the World Health Congress this week.
Although there were some improvements in quality year over year, hospitals performed poorly in many quality areas. There were 1,244 hospitals that were part of the 2009 survey, and of those 53.5% met Leapfrog's standard for bypass surgery, as compared with 43% in 2008. Likewise, 44% of hospitals met Leapfrog's standard for heart angioplasty, compared with 35% in 2008.
