New Jersey releases report of adverse events from 2008; falls are most reported

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services released a document earlier this week detailing the adverse events reported in 2008, reports The Star-Ledger. Patient falls were the most reported adverse event during 2008, making up 40% of the 533 total adverse events reported. Twenty falls resulted in patient deaths. The second most reported event was pressure ulcers.

Since mandatory reporting was instituted four years ago, the number of adverse event reports in New Jersey has increased. This is seen as a good thing by experts, as staff members are being encouraged to report errors.
