Hospitals in upstate New York have taken advantage of quality incentives provided by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to the tune of $22 million since 2004, reports Healthcare IT News.

Forty-eight facilities participated in the Hospital Performance Incentive Program and received money back for adhering to quality measures. Hospitals that were part of the financial incentive program consistently scored higher on CMS' quality measures than those facilities that had payments not at risk.

Some of the improvements include smoking cessation counseling, surgical patients receiving appropriate venous thromboembolism prophylaxis from 24 hours prior to surgery through 24 hours after surgery, and patients receiving initial medications after arriving within six hours.
