The Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that it will be awarding $60 million in grants for research projects aimed at breaking barriers to adopting and implementing healthcare information technology (HIT). The so called Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Project (SHARP) is being funded with money made available through the HITECH Act, a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The four-year grants will target the following areas:

  • Security of HIT
  • Patient-centered cognitive support
  • Healthcare application and network platform architectures
  • Secondary use of EHR data

Applications will be accepted through January 25, 2010. For more information, visit http://healthit.hhs.gov
