Stemming from the mandate of a 2005 law, the New York State Department of Health released a report last week outlining hospital-acquired infection rates by hospital and by specific region. The report pulls together data submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network submitted by the 186 hospitals in the state during 2008.

Overall, hospitals showed variability within the state, offering consumers a choice of where to go for care. The report breaks down rates for surgical site infections (colon, coronary artery bypass graft, and hip replacement) and central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) in adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care units (ICUs). Overall, surgical site infection rates were highest for colon surgery at 5%. The state's rates for surgical site infections decreased in 2008 and were lower than the national average for the year 2006-2007 (the latest year available).
