Major U.S. healthcare groups specify how they will try to save $2 trillion annually

In May 2009, a group of major healthcare players came together to take on the Obama administration's challenge of reducing healthcare costs by 1.5%, or $2 trillion, every year. These groups include the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, Advanced Medical Technology Association, America's Health Insurance Plans, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, and the Service Employees International Union.
Earlier this week, these groups released a letter to President Obama, outlining some of the ways they will attempt to achieve this, most of which will be done through a large amount of collaboration among many healthcare organizations. Some of these include:
- Reduction of medical errors
- Better understanding of human factors
- Increased attention paid to infection control and prevention within healthcare settings
- Better management of patients with chronic illness
- Improvement of care transitions
- Reduction in practice of defensive medicine
