Pilot project to track adverse events related to blood transfusions

Nine hospitals began taking part in a pilot program last week to track and analyze adverse events related to blood transfusions. The AABB, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks, is launching a national "hemovigilance" pilot program in conjunction with a larger U.S. Biovigilance Network. The larger project will track adverse events related to tissue, organ, and cell therapy transplantation using both governmental and nongovernmental agencies in a confidential manner.
There is currently no national system in place to track adverse events related to blood and blood transfusions. Data collected from such a system would prevent similar errors in the future.
