Q: Do you have advice for how we should handle National Patient Safety Goal 13.01.01 in all settings?

A: There are many ways to achieve compliance with this goal about involving patients in their care. The Speak Up campaign from The Joint Commission provides education materials that can be given to patients and families to explain what to expect. Many of these materials are available to download, print, and provide to patients in all settings as appropriate. Education for patients and families on available reporting methods for their concerns can also be provided through the organization’s Web site, via brochures as part of the orientation or registration process, and through other means of communication.
