University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine awarded grant to study HAIs

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has awarded the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine a grant to study and contain healthcare-acquired infections (HAI), reports The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The study will particularly focus on Clostridium difficile (c-diff), MRSA, and A. baumannii. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.7 million patients contract a HAI each year.
The study will not only look at which strategies are best for preventing HAIs, but which have the largest economic impact on the hospital. Additionally, the study will attempt to gather data on whether to isolate patients who show no symptoms of carrying an HAI. One thing the study will not address are the development of new antibiotics.
