Joint Commission announces no new NPSGs for 2010

The Joint Commission has announced some significant changes concerning its National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) that will influence how facilities prepare themselves for surveys and keep patients safe. This year, the Patient Safety Advisory Group will review and revise the current list of NPSGs. Because of this review process, there will be no new NPSGs announced for 2010, which comes as welcome news to many hospitals that are struggling to comply with all of the NPSGs. ?I was glad to see it,? says Sherry Mazer, FACHE, CPHQ, regulatory officer at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia. ?You need to give us a chance to hardwire some of these goals before you keep putting new expectations on them. I keep saying, ?Do you want quantity or quality?? ? Mazer says she?ll use this year to focus on instilling the requirements of the NPSGs in her staff members. Additionally, The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) announced in February that as of January 1, it will continue to survey organizations on their compliance with Goal #8, concerning medication reconciliation processes, but any findings will not be factored into the accreditation decision. The Joint Commission will refine and reevaluate the expectations associated with the goal.
