CMS to conduct a "dry run" of nine patient safety and quality indicators

Hospitals that participate in the Reporting Hospital Quality Data for Annual Payment Update initiative will be able to review and download their own reports for nine measures that will be added to the Hospital Compare Web site in December, reports AHA News.

This "dry run" of the measures will give hospitals time to review their own reports as well as offer comments. The measures, developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and endorsed by the National Quality Forum, can be broken into patient safety and quality indicators. All hospitals that submitted Medicare fee-for-service claims data in 2006 that apply to the nine measures will be able to download the reports.

The five patient safety measures are:

  • Death among surgical patients with treatable serious complications
  • Iatrogenic pneumothorax, adult
  • Postoperative wound dehiscence
  • Accidental puncture or laceration
  • Complication/patient safety for selected indicators (composite)

The four quality indicators are:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm mortality rate
  • Hip fracture mortality rate
  • Mortality for selected medical conditions (composite)
  • Mortality for selected surgical procedures (composite)
