Philadelphia-area cancer center focusing on care of survivors

Although care of cancer patients is often thought to include rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center's OncoLink program hope to expand that notion, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer. This partnership aims to help cancer survivors know how to care for themselves after they have received treatment for their cancer. The Institute of Medicine published a report in 2005 titled Lost in Transition which addressed the need for better emotional and physical care for cancer survivors.
Currently in the U.S., 12 million cancer survivors have been discharged from their formal cancer treatment and are left to wonder what they should be looking for, or how to deal with the negative side effects of their treatment. Part of this new partnership includes an online tool, OncoLife, which can help cancer survivors manage their through a computerized care plan.
