Wales: Medical and patient safety errors increase in past year

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, February 3, 2009

A Freedom of Information request by Liberal Democrats has revealed that from 2007-2008, 191 deaths were caused from medical errors, accidents and abuse, reports the Daily Post. This number is a 50% increase from the 129 deaths recorded from 2005-2006.

The report also found that patient safety incidents have increased during the past three years, from 28,000 to 56,000. To prevent further patient safety deaths, the National Health Service (NHS) launched the 1000 Lives Campaign last year. "The rise in deaths due to errors within the National Health Services is shocking given that many of these deaths are avoidable," Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson Peter Black told the Post. "While it is inevitable that some patients die in hospitals, it's unacceptable that patients die due to NHS error."
