Singapore: In effort to keep accreditation, clinics change triage system

Singapore's National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP), the country's basic medical care provider, has achieved Joint Commission International accreditation and hopes to maintain the accreditation with shorter wait times for seriously ill patients, according to the Straits Times.

Patients presenting with symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pains, or high fever are seen almost immediately by a doctor at NHGP, reports the Times. The new triage system is run by frontline staff members who are trained to assess patients and decide whether they belong in a priority line. The move comes after the NHGP's quality management department surmised that patients, especially the elderly, might not be outspoken about their symptoms.
