U.S.: Experts urge residents to sleep

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, December 9, 2008

Experts from the Institute of Medicine have recommended that medical and surgical residents in hospitals work no more than 16 hours before taking a nap, reports the Washington Post.

After 16 hours of work, experts say residents should be required to take a five-hour break. They should also receive one day off per week and two back-to-back days off per month, according to the Post.

The expert panel created a 324-page document that also outlines the importance of supervising residents.
