A Lebanon, PA hospital installed a robot in its pharmacy to help ensure prescriptions were being filled correctly, reports The Lebanon Daily News. The robot, nicknamed Dee Spenser by staff members, can package and dispense medications for patients. By taking on this task, hospital pharmacists have more time to do other important parts of their jobs. Additionally, the robot lowers the chance for a human error when doing these tasks by making the process more electronic.

The robot relies on bar coding technology to function. Each different medication receives a different bar code, which allows the robot to track different types of medications, as well as find the correct medication. The facility, Good Samaritan Hospital, spent $700,000 to implement this system and expects 70% to 75% of its medications to be filled in this manner.
