Study: Pain not being adequately treated for 33% of patients

A Harvard School of Public Health study shows that one third of all patients think their pain is not being adequately managed, reports The McClatchy-Tribune. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the results show that even though much has been learned about treating pain in recent years, pain sufferers have reported little improvement. The study surveyed 40 metropolitan areas and found that one third of patients felt their pain was poorly controlled. This ranged from 57% of hospital patients who felt their pain was controlled in New York City to 72% in Birmingham, AL.
Critics say that there are not enough pain specialists to treat the amount of patients in the United States who have chronic pain. Also, medical schools do not spend enough time educating students about pain management, says the article.
