The American Hospital Association (AHA) is asking all American hospitals to consider standardizing the color of their patient alert wristbands to improve quality of care and create safer environments for patients. The AHA is hosting member calls on the topic on September 19 and September 23. The reasoning is that many doctors and nurses practice in multiple hospitals, sometimes across state lines. If one is confused about which wristband colors correspond with certain conditions, there is a chance for serious error in patient care.

The AHA is asking for a national consensus to adopt the following three wristband colors for the following three meanings:

  • Red to denote an allergy
  • Yellow to denote a fall risk
  • Purple to denote a patient's "Do Not Resuscitate" status
