Ontario hospitals to begin reporting superbug outbreaks

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, August 5, 2008

Beginning in late September, Ontario will become Canada's third province to require hospitals to report on the number of cases of Clostrodium difficile (C. diff), according to the Globe and Mail.

Reports will be published on the government's Web site and will let residents know how many cases of the hospital-acquired infection were reported for each hospital. New policy will require C. diff cases that occur more than 72 hours after admission to the hospital be reported, according the Globe and Mail.

By the end of the December, the province will also track methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, and next year will move onto tracking hand hygiene compliance among healthcare workers.
