UK: National Patient Safety Agency forms surgical safety committee

Britain’s Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson announced the establishment of a new clinical board for surgical safety, reports the Independent. Donaldson highlighted 14 cases of brain surgery patients who were the victims of wrong-site surgery in the past three years, according to the Independent.
The victims had holes drilled into the wrong part of the skull in an attempt to relieve pressure on the brain, reports the Independent. In 2007, more than one operation per month was performed on the wrong site.
