Scotland’s health authorities limit use of antibiotics

In an effort to curb the spread of superbugs like Methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridum difficile (C. diff), the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group has issued a reduction in the use of antibiotics in hospitals by 25%, reports Scotland on Sunday.

According to the new measure, hospitals will no longer administer precautionary antibiotics to patients in the emergency department before ordering tests. Certain antibiotics linked to the spread of MRSA and C. diff will be strictly rationed, reports Scotland.
