AMA offers medical tourism advice

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, June 24, 2008

The American Medical Association (AMA) has released guidelines to patients traveling abroad for medical care, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The AMA says in 2006 about 150,000 Americans traveled abroad to receive some form of medical care. The AMA guidelines include:

  • Looking for accredited providers  
  • Knowing legal rights in other countries  
  • Identifying potential risks of surgery
