NHS loses 31,000 electronic patient records

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, June 24, 2008

Laptops containing 31,000 unencrypted patient records have been stolen, six from a filing cabinet in St. George's Hospital in London and one from a physician's home, reports ComputerWorldUK.com

Britain's Department of Health requires mobile devices be protected by encryption. The data on the hospital laptops, which were stored under lock and key, was being used to assess patient waiting times. Hospital officials said such information is usually stored on the hospital's computer network. The laptops were being used temporarily because of a problem with the network. The data was password protected, reports ComputerWorldUK.com.
