Canadian healthcare associations support disclosure guidelines for adverse events
Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, June 10, 2008
The Canadian Nurses Association and other healthcare provider organizations have worked together to develop guidelines issued by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute regarding disclosure after adverse events in healthcare settings. The guidelines advise for healthcare providers to develop and implement policies and practices for the disclosure of adverse events to patients and their families.
The guidelines indicate disclosure is the responsibility of all healthcare providers. The guidelines also note that most adverse events are systematic problems that need to be addressed, and not an error to be blamed one individual.
