UK: Government warns doctors to use caution when patients seek overseas treatment

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, May 27, 2008

The Medical Defence Union (MDU) has advised physicians to use caution when responding to patient requests for help or advice about receiving treatment abroad, according to a MDU press release.

For both legal and patient safety reasons, the MDU suggests doctors warn patients about all aspects of medical travel, including potential communication difficulties, possible problems with compensation, and the possibility that follow-up treatment back at home might not be as quick as the treating doctor thinks.
