Hand washing audits become mandatory for accreditation in Canada

Beginning in January 2009, hospitals and other healthcare facilities seeking accreditation from Accreditation Canada will need to audit whether their doctors and nurses are washing their hands, according to the Globe and Mail.

Hospitals must also introduce plans to raise handwashing compliance, reports the Globe and Mail. Experts say only 40% of healthcare providers in Canada are properly washing their hands, a practice that helps reduce infection.
