World’s first patient safety professor appointed
Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, May 27, 2008
Coventry University in England has appointed the world's first patient safety professor, reports Coventry Evening Telegraph.
Brian Toft, PhD, has chaired major investigations in patient safety incidents, and was the first nonphysician to chair the inquiry into the infamous medical error surrounding Wayne Jowett, a UK celebrity who died after receiving an anti-cancer drug in his spine instead of a vein.
Toft said he sees his role as using his expert knowledge to prevent patients from being inadvertently harmed by the healthcare practices, reports the Coventry Evening Telegraph. Toft is also a member of the European Regional Advisory Council to the World Health Organization on Healthcare and Patient Safety.
