More than half of blood transfusions could cause harm

The safety of blood transfusions is coming into question after a report showed more than half of transfusions did more harm than good, reports The Guardian.

The report, published in an April 2008 issue of New Scientist, concluded that some patients face a sixfold greater risk of dying after transfusion. Experts suggest the age of the donated blood may come into play, according to The Guardian.
