Canadian Patient Safety Institute releases disclosure guidelines

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, April 1, 2008

Guidelines on how to disclose adverse events to patients and their families have been released by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and the Disclosure Working Group.

The guidelines stress providing an apology and timely information to patients and provide a strategy for professional support to healthcare providers. Executives of the two organizations hope the guidelines stress the importance of open communication between provider and patient, and also the need to recognize patient rights.
