Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, March 4, 2008
The highest rates ever recorded of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have been released in a report from 81 countries, according to a news release by the World Health Organization (WHO). The highest occurrences of the disease were recorded in Azerbaijan. Modlova, Ukarine, Tomsk Oblast and Uzbekistan all reported rates that surpass previous reports.
Surveys also suggest the MDR-TB is widespread in China as well, according to the release. A link between HIV infection and MDR-TB is high, with some countries finding double the instances of MDR-TB among patients with HIV.
