U.S. government estimates healthcare-related spending to rise sharply in next decade

An aging population and higher prices will cause healthcare spending to rise 6.7% annually throughout the next decade, reports The Boston Globe. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said on February 25 that by 2017, healthcare spending could rise to $4.3 trillion per year, or an average of $13,101 per person. Federal and state governments will pay for 39% of healthcare expenditures by then, up from 46% in 2006.

In addition, spending related to hospitals themselves will rise 6.9% per year during the next decade, economists predicted.
