UK: Misuse of painkiller prescribing causing addiction

A parliamentary inquiry in Britain has concluded that its physicians are to blame for a growing number of Britons addicted to painkillers, reports The Observer.

Members of Parliament said physicians ignored guidelines regarding benzodiazepine tranquilizers, often allowing patients to take the medication for longer than the recommended four weeks or giving patients repeat prescriptions without checking their history, reports The Observer. The inquiry also blamed physicians for not taking patients' requests for help seriously when they said they were addicts.

The Observer reports members of Parliament felt the issue was "extremely concerning" and that Britons were "still being negligently prescribed these drugs by their general practitioner."
