NHS in Scotland spends double for medical errors

The National Health System in Scotland paid a record £23 million for medical errors, a figure that more than doubles the bill of the previous year, reports the Sunday Herald.

Still, some leaders for patient advocacy groups say many patients lack resources to seek compensation when they become victims of a medical error, and the high bill was a result of highly-compensated cases, such as that of Leslie Ash, who received a record payment of £5 million after contracting a hospital-acquired infection, reports the Herald. Others, reports the Herald fear a "culture of compensation" is lowering the amount of money NHS spends on necessary health resources.
