Union leaders and heads of the Washington Hospital Association have come to an agreement to effectively staff all hospitals in the state, reports the The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The plan was endorsed by Governor Chris Gregoire on February 4. Gregoire thinks the agreement is a step in the right direction because it keeps patients safer while lowering costs.
The new plan calls for hospitals to keep track of how many nurses they have budgeted to be on each floor during each shift and how many nurses actually are there. Hospitals and the state will be doing a better job of keeping track of nursing needs, says Gregoire.
