UK surgery success rates to be made public
Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, February 5, 2008
In a show of support to National Health Service, which will soon collect data on surgery outcomes in the UK, Bernard Ribeiro, president of the Royal College of Surgeons urged the nation's surgeons to share the outcomes of their surgeries, according to The Independent.
"Cardiac surgeons have been doing this for years. Ultimately, our aim is that data on all surgical procedures should be available--but that isn't going to happen tomorrow," said Ribeiro in The Independent.
The National Health Service (NHS) will begin measuring the outcome of hip replacements, knee replacements, hernia procedures and varicose vein repairs in April. Outcomes will be measured by questionnaires filled out by patients. Currently, the only surgery success rates that are measured are for cardiac procedures.
